Some Endgame positions from my facebook friend

Image
I was just surfing the net today...Suddenly  I herd a message tone on facebook...I opened it and I got few positions from my friend Chinmay Kelaskar of Mumbai who posted me some positions. We had a chat as he requested me to post it on blog..I too found these position interesting..So here they are White is in check so has to move his king..But the real question is where ?..If the king moves to g7 black will play Re7 and will make a draw...If the king goes on the f- file Black will move his rook to e2 and skewers. And the king can't also leave the pawn...So calculate carefully as Black also has some tricks at his disposal Second position is White to play both players are just one square away from promoting.. If white promotes his pawn...Black will also promote his pawn.As white cannot capture the Queen as it is a stalemate..So think carefully and calculate few moves ahead... And the last one is the Gem of all..Now this one is tough one...Position only for advance playe

Where should the queen go and why?

Image
The position I want to show is from the recent games of U-9 states held at Aurangabad White to play Here in this position Black has just played his knight to e4 attacking the White's queen..Now the queen is under attack and have to move on a safe square..But the question here is which square..Calculate all the possibilities and comment below

What plan Will You make for Black

Image
'  Have look at this position.White has an advantage of bishop pair..But the position is close...So the natural plan for White will be willing to play  f4...and try to open the postion..Black on the other hand have to be active..He have to counter attack on the queen side with some moves like b5..But the direct b5 move will be wrong here as white will respond with f4 and it is hard to see what black will  do? So find the correct plan for Black

Pawn Endgame Training

Image
The position is from a tournament game...White offered a draw claming that its a draw. Now its Black's move  He thought that after 1...c4 + 2Ka3 Kc5 3.Ka4 Kxd5 white will play Kb4 and he might be in  zugzwang   and will loose the c4 pawn.  Both players were not willing to take risk and  agreed a draw here...Can you assets the position correctly ??

Black to play

Image
Its my game versus Atharva ,P. I am having Black pieces this time....White has just played Qh5 intending to attack on king side which might be premature....How can black take advantage of this postion ?? Please post all your calculations

Having a bad day

Image
(Position after Black's Rh6) Its my game against Kahane Bhavesh..I was having white pieces and was exited with the fact that Black's king was still in the center,so my basic enctint was to attack some how on the king.I made some premature moves in order to attack his king before..After thinking I released that Black has a threat of Rg6 hitting my g2 pawn..And it would be helped by the monster of b7                      I played the terrible move Na5??? putting the knight on rim without thinking as I wanted to swap the bishop first. Now its Black to play Black has a long think of 20 minutes and played the move which I didn't calculated..Can you guess what I missed in the game..and calculate all the variations?? My opponent played that move but didn't continue correctly..Can you do better than my opponent ??

Improving Tips

People find it very hard to improve from year to year. Chess is such a vast game, and people sometimes hit limits on their grade beyond which they cannot seem to improve. The evolving advice presented in this section is centred around possible methods of improvement. We may not reach the playing standards of a Karpov or Kasparov, but we may hope to improve our game to be the best player in our chess club! Step by Step: Test

Image
Step by Step: Test  is designed to test and improve your chess skills. For best results, set the position up on the board and think for as long as you need without moving the pieces. White has just played  9.h3  to drive away the black knight on g4. How should Black continue? Rohit, Goginenni (2171) – Szabo, Krisztian (2191) Wch U12 Oropesa del Mar (7), 28.10.2001 Sicilian Defense [B21] 1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.c3 dxc3 4.Nxc3 Nc6 5.Nf3 e6 6.Bc4 Qc7 7.0-0 Nf6 8.Qe2 Ng4 9.h3 9...Nd4! 0-1  A common tactic for Black in the Smith-Morra Gambit. White to move

One of the biggest mistakes chess players makes while solving positions is just guessing moves...They just guess moves and hope one of the answers they give will work. This is really a bad habit. If you want to improve your game you must start to work on your calculations..Think as if it the position in your game and try to calculate. Please give complete answers with variation...

10 steps to a Better Chess Opening Repertoire

Write it down , and then  print it out . Begin by recording what you know already, and build on that. Don’t be afraid that some parts of it are incomplete - realize that building an opening repertoire is a  long term goal As  Mark Dvoretsky  explained in Opening Preparation – openings you play should: Fit your  style  (open vs. closed positions) Fit your  memory’s abilities . Relatively speaking, some openings require understanding of plans (e.g. Closed Sicilian), while others, such as King’s Indian defence require remembering a lot of theory as well Don’t easily give up  on lines that did not work out in a game, instead try to understand what particular mistake caused a defeat. That being said, if you keep having bad results in an opening – it’s worth reviewing whether it matches your style (see above). It’s may sound obvious, but  review it  against books like  MCO  or  NCO , computer databases, etc. Pay attention to  move orders  and understand their implications.

How to Analyze a Chess Game - 10 Point Checklist

I already wrote about  analyzing chess games , but would like to return to the subject, as I have recently re-evaluated the thoroughness with which this has to be done. Now I created a 10 point checklist, which repeats some of the previous ideas, but is more appropriate in the context of a single analyzed game: Is the opening well annotated? Will you likely have problems in the same line ever again? Against the same opponent? Do you have an  evaluation graph  of the game – in SCID or elsewhere? If not – do you have an idea of when advantage shifted from one side to another? Is every blunder marked as “?” in your analysis? Have you updated your  opening repertoire  (if you have it stored on a computer) based on this game? Did you learn anything about chess in general from this game? Write it down! Did you learn anything about yourself? Did it reveal your weakness in any area of the game – tactics, strategy, psychological issues (lack of confidence, nervousness, etc)? Was your

Must-know: Openings

The opening defines the course of the game. There are lots of opening lines, so the first problem each player faces is “which ones should I choose”? Opening choice 1. Let’s consider two options: a) for beginners b) for more advanced players For those who are new to chess: you will need an opening book or, more modern and convenient, a chess database. I am using both Chess Assistant and ChessBase (they are the best ones available). Chess.com also has its own online database which could prove to be quite helpful. You had better start with one of the main moves, either 1.e4 or 1.d4. Check out the opening tree, review some top players’ games and see what type of positions you like. If you are a complete newcomer, it could prove to be tricky since you won’t be able to tell the difference between them. In this case you might have to resort to your friends’ or coach’s help. For stronger players: some people are quite proficient in chess, but somehow they never paid attention to their opening
